Getting involved in your community is one of the best things you can do you give back what you have received: the blessings and the learning. It is also a good way to relate to other people whom you will learn from and at the same time, you can learn from. By getting involved in your community, you also open yourself to be a blessing to others.
So how do you get involved in your community? Here are the five best ways to get involved.
1. Assess yourself
To be able to contribute more to your community, it would be best to know your strengths; hence, you should assess yourself. Try to figure out what you can share best. For example, if you are good at cooking, you might as well volunteer as a cook for a soup kitchen.
2. Be inclusive
On the other hand, if you’re an employer and you want your company to get involved in the community, it would be best to do a survey among your employees. By knowing what matters most to them, you can easily focus your time and resources there. Being inclusive also helps other people to grow.
3. Decide on what to give
Once you have found out your interests, it is time to decide on how you can help. You can choose among the three - money, goods and time.
Money is great because it can fund a certain program. It is also good for continuity especially if the community project needs more funds. This may also be the easiest considering that you just need to write a check; so, that won’t take so much of your time.
With goods, it is good especially if you pull all the goods from other donors. You need to create a donation box where they can put things that are needed by the community. For instance, a “garage sale for a cause,” your trash can be other people’s treasure. Both of you will benefit from it by freeing up your home clutters and the same time, other people can make use of it.
On the other hand, time is as important if your community needs a helping hand. By giving your time, you are also giving yourself. You can meet a lot of people and get to know them on a personal level. Hearing stories of inspiration from others will truly make you a better person; you will appreciate the things and people you have in your life.
4. Buy from local shop
Buy local produce from your community. It will not only help them earn money but will also help in the employment of the people in your community. Think about this: if you patronize the local products, an employee can provide for his/her family. His/her kids can eat and go to school.
5. Organize your own event
This may be a big goal, but it never hurts to try. Create an event that is fun and will also help the people in your community. For example, you can do a regular Zumba session. You can do it once a week. Not only will you enjoy, you can also make everybody fit and healthy.
